YOYO – MUCH MORE THAN A TOY

For many people, the first experience with a yoyo begins with a simple movement down and back up. Modern yoyo play goes far beyond that.

Players perform long string combinations, looping tricks, horizontal elements, fingerspins, grinds and many other techniques. National and international yoyo competitions bring together professional players performing complex, creative and technically demanding routines.

YOYOS FOR KIDS AND BEGINNERS

A first yoyo does not need to be the most expensive or technically advanced model. For a beginner, ease of use and the ability to learn the fundamentals are much more important.

For children and first-time players, we generally recommend a responsive yoyo.

A responsive yoyo returns to the hand with a tug of the string, making it easier to learn basic control and classic tricks.

A good beginner yoyo allows the player to progress from tricks such as Sleeper, Walk the Dog, Rock the Baby and Around the World towards more advanced string combinations.

RESPONSIVE VS UNRESPONSIVE YOYOS

One of the most important things to understand when choosing a yoyo is the difference between responsive and unresponsive play.

A RESPONSIVE YOYO returns to the hand when the string is tugged. These models are generally recommended for children and beginners.

An UNRESPONSIVE YOYO does not return simply by tugging the string. Instead, the player performs a technique called a bind.

An unresponsive setup allows the yoyo to spin freely for longer and provides the freedom required for advanced string combinations. This is the standard configuration used by most intermediate, advanced and professional modern yoyo players.

Some models can be converted from responsive to unresponsive play by changing the bearing, making them an excellent choice for players who want a yoyo that can progress with their skills.

PLASTIC YOYOS

A plastic yoyo does not necessarily mean a basic or low-quality toy.

Modern performance plastic yoyos can offer excellent spin and playing characteristics. They are particularly popular with beginners, although some high-performance plastic models are also enjoyed by very experienced players.

Plastic yoyos are well suited to everyday practice, and accidentally hitting the floor is generally less painful than doing the same with an expensive precision-machined metal yoyo.

A quality plastic yoyo can therefore be an excellent choice for learning and regular practice.

METAL YOYOS

A metal yoyo is usually chosen once a player has mastered the fundamentals and wants to progress towards more advanced combinations.

Modern metal yoyos are commonly precision CNC-machined from aluminium alloys. Different body geometries, weight distributions and rim designs allow manufacturers to tune stability, speed, spin time and overall playing feel.

More advanced yoyos may use higher-grade aluminium alloys, stainless steel, titanium or combinations of different metals.

As a result, two metal yoyos that appear similar can feel completely different in play.

BIMETAL YOYOS

Bimetal yoyos are among the designs commonly used for high-performance and competitive play.

A typical bimetal yoyo combines an aluminium body with separate stainless-steel outer rings. Moving more mass towards the rims can increase stability and rotational momentum.

This construction is particularly popular among advanced and professional 1A players performing long and technically demanding combinations.

FINGERSPIN AND DNA YOYOS

Fingerspin has become one of the most recognisable techniques in modern yoyo play.

During a fingerspin, the spinning yoyo is caught on the player's finger and continues rotating there. Some yoyos feature specially designed hubs that help guide the finger towards the optimal spinning position.

One of the best-known tricks based on the fingerspin technique is DNA.

If learning DNA is your main goal, look for a yoyo with a body and hub specifically designed for fingerspin performance.

1A, 2A, 3A, 4A AND 5A YOYO STYLES

Modern yoyo play includes several major competitive styles.

1A – the most popular modern yoyo style, using one yoyo to perform string tricks and combinations.

2A – a looping style generally performed with two responsive yoyos, creating rapid repetitive loops and two-handed combinations.

3A – two yoyos are used simultaneously for complex string tricks and combinations.

4A – Offstring play. The yoyo is not attached to the string and can be thrown into the air and caught back on the string.

5A – Freehand or Counterweight play. The string is not attached to the player's finger; instead, a counterweight is attached to the end.

Different styles require yoyos with different designs and characteristics.

YOYO STRINGS, BEARINGS AND ACCESSORIES

Even the best yoyo needs proper maintenance.

Yoyo string is a consumable item and should be replaced regularly. A worn string can negatively affect performance and may eventually break.

The type and condition of the yoyo bearing have a major influence on spin performance and responsive or unresponsive behaviour.

Response pads, bearing oil, axles and other replacement parts are also important for maintaining your equipment.

With proper care, a quality yoyo can provide years of use.

HOW TO CHOOSE A YOYO

If you are buying a first yoyo for a child or someone who has never played before, a quality responsive model is usually the best place to start.

If the player already understands the basics and wants to learn more advanced string combinations, consider an unresponsive yoyo.
